“WHY... SO... SERIOUS!”

The Deer Hunter(s)

Helena police to start killing deer in city:

HELENA (AP) — Helena police will begin killing mule deer in the city limits next week.

Police Chief Troy McGee told city commissioners Monday that he expects officers to reach their quota of 50 deer by the end of October.

The pilot project is part of an effort to control the city’s growing population of mule deer. The plan was approved by the state Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission.

I can’t wait for the follow-up story about the first bubba asshat who decides it’s open season and is charged with discharging a firearm within city limits trying to git himself one of dem there deers…

Comes the Circus

Judge orders trials moved out of Missoula (emphasis mine):

MISSOULA (AP) — A Missoula judge says two men, accused of beating a homeless man to death, cannot receive fair trials in Missoula and must be tried elsewhere.

[...]

Larson ordered that 18-year-old Anthony St. Dennis stand trial Sept. 26 in Great Falls before District Judge Thomas McKittrick; and that 20-year-old Dustin Strahan be tried Nov. 17 in Helena before District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock.

A Degree of Whiplash

Following up this post, Signs of the Apocalypse, 27th in a Series (gratuitous self-link), we’ve gone from a high of 75° to a high of -5° in exactly three weeks. The math is easy on that differential. That kind of drop is not unheard of, but it sure felt quick. As I type this at 11:09PM it’s -11°. “Thankfully,” the high on Thursday should be freezing.

No Montana Ride for the PGR

So apparently the Baucus Family, who recently lost a member in Iraq, doesn’t want the Patriot Guard Riders to show up. That’s a shame. I hope those Westborough Wackos show the same respect for the family’s wishes (but I doubt they will).

I can’t believe Jerry Seinfeld came to podunk Helena, Montana, to perform. He pretty much summed it up in his opening:

“Helena! I can’t believe I showed up!”

He was pretty funny, but then again, that’s his job. I used to watch his TV show when it was still being produced (I’m not a big enough fan to watch it continuously in syndication). One thing I noticed back then is that a lot of his stand up act found it’s way into the show. So it was nice to see “fresh” material last night.

There’s finally a decent theater in Helena, the Cinemark 8. Tonight I got a sneak preview thanks to Gerry and Stacy (the former winning tickets to a free movie two nights before the grand opening). We’ve been waiting for a decent theater in this town for many years and first impressions are good.

Oh, the free movie we chose was “Be Cool.” It was okay. Not as good as the first movie, “Get Shorty,” but not bad.
