Google Street View Billings

The first city in Montana to be photographed by Google’s intrepid street view fleet is Billings. Only one of the houses I lived in has been photographed, however. When we first moved there in 1981 we rented a place on the west end for a few months before moving to the heights.

Best Movie of the Year So Far
Permalink | Tweet This! | | May 28, 2008 by John in Entertainment, Geekasm
Okay, best mainstream/blockbuster/popcorn movie of the year so far: Iron Man. I’m not going to say it’s better than No Country of Old Men or There Will Be Blood. But for me Ironman is tied for first for the best comic book adaptation of all time with Batman Begins, and I consider it in the top 10 of science fiction movies. Come July 18th it might be a three-way tie with The Dark Knight. DC and Marvel really seem to be hitting their stride lately. Heck I even liked Superman Returns (well, parts of it).
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was okay, not great. A few things bothered me, not the least of which was the age of the lead actor in the context of the actions supposedly carried out by his character and the circumstances survived by the character. I mean I can suspend disbelief on the alien bits, but c’mon, with that many bullets flying through the air, somebody is going to at least get a flesh wound, even accidentally. And Dr. Jones’ participating in secret spy missions against the commies between Last Crusade and this installment? Puh. Leez. Don’t even get me started on the A-bomb test.
Update: I agree with everything in this article.

Apple released the Iron Man trailer early and it looks out-friggin-standing. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect as Stark. They’ve updated the origin story perfectly for the times.

Google Makes Life Worth Living
Permalink | Tweet This! | | September 29, 2006 by John in Geekasm
Okay, maybe not (I’m not entirely sure what does make life worth living, but I digress…).
Google is constantly upgrading their online applications. They always seem to have something cool in the works. A week or three ago they upgraded the personal portal to add tabs. Today they roll out a major upgrade of Google Reader. Half the fun of using Google products is just the raw usability and elegant simplicity. Those who hold Google up as an example of “successful bad design” do a grave disservice to the craftsman at the big G. The other half of the fun is the process of “discovering” what they’ve changed and exploring it to its fullest. Total geekasm.
You just never know when they’re going to change things up. It’s a little like xmas morning all year around - you just never know when Santa is going to visit.

Good News, Bad News

Good news: The sequel to Batman Begins is titled The Dark Knight. Frank Miller fans rejoice.
Bad news: Heath Ledger is the Joker. He’s not a bad actor by any stretch but I would have preferred Crispin Glover. There’s also the inevitable jokes that will derail the marketing efforts, “Brokebat Mountain,” etc. One of the greatest things about Batman Begins, especially when compared to the previous movies, is that none of the actors in and of themselves overshadowed the story.
Update: After seeing The Dark Knight three times in the theater (plus an IMAX viewing in Spokane) I take back everything I said about Heath Ledger. His performance was inspiring.

SCI FI Announces Caprica: “Caprica would take place more than half a century before the events that play out in Battlestar Galactica. The people of the Twelve Colonies are at peace and living in a society not unlike our own, but where high-technology has changed the lives of virtually everyone for the better. But a startling breakthrough in robotics is about to occur, one that will bring to life the age-old dream of marrying artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first living robot: a Cylon.”
Oh WOW. GEEKASM!
