The Ending I Wanted

Over at FirstShowing.Net - they’ve gotten their hands on the original ending of I AM LEGEND. It is spectacular. It isn’t at all the ending of the novel, but it works, it has weight. I liked it a lot. And even though the animation is pretty damn great…. It’s still exactly that… it’s animation, and I want in a scene constructed like that to BELIEVE in what I’m seeing. This make sense to anyone?

This is what I was expecting, based on the earlier events of the film. But it is very different from the actual ending in the theatrical release, where the “alpha male” vampire breaks through the glass and Will Smith eats a grenade, destroying himself and everyone else except the woman and child who were protected by a door or something. Apparently Neville dies in every other incarnation of the story (the original book, the 60’s movie and The Omega Man), and he still could’ve died in this alternate ending, but I just prefer the added revelation of some sort of fragment of humanity remaining in the vampires.
According to Wikipedia, “This ending will be used in the DVD release.”
