How to Make Baked Macaroni and Cheese
My mom has a killer recipe for baked macaroni and cheese, but it starts with a rue, which to me is a pain in the ass. I’m going to have to try this recipe from Lifespy.com, sometime this Fall, that is. I’m not firing up the oven in August.
Mac and cheese, one of the real American comfort food. Sure, it’s really easy to get them out of the box. I still think it’s cheating yourself out of an experience. Some of those out of the box mac and cheese taste like the cardboard box they come in. So be honest with yourself and treat you and your family to good ol’ homemade mac and cheese.
Recipe after the jump…
What you need:
- 2 cups elbow macaroni
- 1 cup diced cheddar
- 1 cup grated Parmesan
- 1 small onion diced
- 1 cup cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsps butter
- 2 tbsps flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- A few grinds of pepper
- 3/4 cup bread crumbs
What to do:
- Cook and drain macaroni.
- In a bowl fold the butter, flour, salt, pepper, milk and cream until well integrated.
- Add the onion and the cheeses.
- Mix all of the ingredients and transfer to a 2-quart casserole.
- Now sprinkle the top with some bread crumbs. This will form a nice crust over the whole thing.
- Bake at 350 for 20 to 30 minutes.
Results (8/20/07): Well, it’s good, but it’s not like Mom’s. I’ll have to experiment with the recipe a bit.
