Does college matter? My best friend never went to college and he’s doing just fine financially. Somehow we both manage to live just a little beyond our means, but I’ve got a school loan sucking up hundreds of dollars of my “means” every month (and it will continue to do so until 2016). I can’t say that I’ve used more than 5% of what I studied in college. I learned and retained more in my graphic design internship which didn’t cost me a dime (and didn’t pay me a dime until after I graduated in ‘94 and did some freelance work for them).

Day Job Update
I don’t post much if anything about my job here anymore, but this bears mentioning.
Apparently I’m no longer a web designer for Northrop Grumman.
No, I haven’t been let go, nor have I quit. Recently I was told (by management) that they see most of the work I’ve been doing for the last couple years as development, not design. I’m now really more of a developer that occasionally does design. That’s what I get for bragging about the XML/XSLT/Xpath/XSL:FO I’ve been doing for the past couple years and the smattering of Java I did recently.
Our biggest client, the state government started pulling web design in-house a couple years ago, which means, as a contractor, they slowly eliminated the work I was doing for state agencies. As that was happening I worked to transition my career here to interface design and usability so that I could continue to maintain some semblance of job security.
Unfortunately the percentage of actual interface design work on any give project is very small, so I’ve had to get more involved in the techy bits.
The upshot for me is that I might be able to start doing web design as a hobby, now that, for all intents and purposes, the conflict of interest has been eliminated. This is good because I’ve had many local people over the years pursue me to do sites for them but in almost all cases I’ve turned them down. And in keeping my full time job I can be very selective in which projects I take on in my spare time.
Update: I’m more than a little pissed that my last version of this post didn’t make it onto Blogger. What you see above is a VERY rough draft. Shit. I’ll try and recreate my final version and update it here.
Update2: restoration has begun.

Via indiatimes.comOutsource your job to earn more!: “Smarter techies are working for three to four companies at the same time, outsourcing all the coding and just supervising them for few hours a day. This way they are able to earn four to five time more than what they used to.”
This is just awesome. Too bad you can’t really outsource design, or actually you could, but I wouldn’t want to. Maybe I could do the design and outsource the implementation, except I wouldn’t want to do that either as I like working with HTML and CSS.
