Update: Around 2006 I purchased a PowerTrip mesh jacket with leather sleeves, shoulders and collar, and a Fieldsheer Zero Condition textile jacket, both with back, shoulder and elbow armor. I think I paid around $120 each. While the Fieldsheer wasn’t my first choice (which was sold out just before I ordered), the transactions were very smooth. I had to exchange the mesh jacket once. If I recall correctly, the 5XL was actually too big.
It’s late 2008 now and I haven’t used my leather jacket since. I still use my leather chaps in cold weather, since it’s very hard to find textile armored overpants in my size. I’ve used both textile jackets on major trips to California, Seattle and Arizona. Their capabilities overlap quite nicely. With my Gerbing heated liner and the Fieldsheer, I’ve ridden comfortably in snow flurries over Monida Pass. With my Frogg Togg rain pants, I laugh at rain.
